Reflecting on the 2024 Houston Media Conference
The 2024 Houston Media Conference was an incredible gathering of artists from various mediums, all brought together by a shared passion for storytelling and a desire to elevate the city's creative scene. It was a wonderful experience to witness such a diverse group of creatives—filmmakers, writers, producers, and more—come together to network, enhance their skill sets, and discuss how to propel the Houston media industry forward.
One of the most thought-provoking aspects of the conference was the discussion around solidifying Houston's identity within the media landscape. There was a palpable sense of excitement, but also a recognition of the challenges that lie ahead. The group grappled with important questions: What narratives do we want to shape about Houston? What types of art do we want to be known for? What kind of attention and investment should we aim to attract? What can we do to keep homegrown talent in Houston?
These are not easy questions to answer, and it was clear that this is just the beginning of a much larger, ongoing conversation. The conference made it evident that while Houston's media identity is still in the process of being defined, the passion and creativity in the room were undeniable. The city's potential to become a significant player in the media world is immense, but it will require collective effort, strategic thinking, and a commitment to telling stories that truly reflect the diversity and dynamism of Houston.
For me, the conference was a valuable opportunity to discuss my passion for storytelling and psychology, and how these elements can positively impact the industry, particularly in shaping narratives about marginalized groups and centering mental health. Although I am not a native of Houston, I live and work here, and I believe it is important to stay aware of the changes coming to the city and to contribute how and when I can.
It was inspiring to see so many like-minded individuals committed to using entertainment as a powerful tool for change. As we continue these conversations and connections, I’m excited to see how Houston’s media landscape will evolve. The road ahead may be complex, but with the talent and determination I witnessed at the conference, I have no doubt that we will craft a unique and powerful identity for our city.
Here's to the ongoing journey of defining Houston's narrative and using our collective creativity to make a lasting impact.
Be well and Happy Storytelling,
