Finding Power in Our Pain: The Inspiration Behind The Day Black Women Decided to Take a 4-Year Vacation

Why The Day Black Women Decided to Take a 4-Year Vacation Matters to Black Women in America

When I learned of Kamala Harris’s loss in the 2024 presidential election, I felt an indescribable ache. Like so many Black women, I carried hopes and expectations into this election cycle—hopes that represented more than just a win. Harris’s candidacy symbolized visibility, validation, and the possibility of meaningful change. Her loss felt personal, like a gut punch that wasn’t just political but deeply emotional, leaving a void in spaces where many of us had placed our optimism and dreams.

The Day Black Women Decided to Take a 4-Year Vacation documentary explores how Black women are reimagining self-care and redefining how they show up for themselves and others in the post-election period.

Finding Resilience and Self-Preservation Through Storytelling

In the days following the election, I found myself wrestling with my emotions, as did so many Black women. This collective sense of disappointment, frustration, and, honestly, exhaustion, wasn’t something that could simply be swept aside. For many of us, it was clear we needed an outlet—a way to transform our emotions into something constructive, powerful, and, ultimately, healing.

That’s when the idea for The Day Black Women Decided to Take a 4-Year Vacation was born. This documentary isn’t just about politics; it’s about resilience, self-preservation, and the personal journeys of Black women who are navigating a complex emotional landscape in the aftermath of Harris’s loss. I wanted to create something that would allow Black women to reflect, release, and redefine how we care for ourselves in times of adversity.
